Perhaps you are intrigued by the name of our coaching pack “Mitt Romney.” It is the perfect opportunity to discover the inspiring career of this American politician and former consultant at Bain & Company.

Who is Mitt Romney?

Mitt Romney is an iconic figure in American politics, having served as governor of Massachusetts. He was also the candidate nominated by the Republican Party in the 2012 presidential election, where he lost to Barack Obama. Before diving into the political arena, Romney began his career in 1975 as a consultant at BCG (Boston Consulting Group) in Boston. He quickly joined Bain & Company (1977), the third law firm of MBBs (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), still in the Boston office.

Bain's transition to politics

Mitt Romney is a graduate of Brigham Young University and later earned a JD-MBA from Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School. At Bain & Company, he developed expertise in leadership, strategy, and complex problem solving. One of his major achievements was the creation of Bain Capital (1984), a structure that would become one of the most important American companies in private equity. And certainly, his career at Bain was a stepping stone to significant achievements in the public sector. His colleagues describe him as a visionary with strong business acumen and a remarkable work ethic. In 1994, he started politics with his first campaign to be a senator. He became governor of Massachusetts in 2003 (until 2007) and senator (Junior Senator) in 2018.

Bain's impact on his career

Mitt Romney credits his experiences at Bain with the ability to navigate the complex waters of politics and public service. In his various interventions, he states that the strategic and analytical skills he honed at Bain helped him, among other things, to reform the Massachusetts health system and to manage the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

Conclusion

Romney de Bain's trip to politics illustrates how a solid foundation in counseling can be the prelude to a distinguished career in any field, including public service. A stint in strategy consulting will equip you for success, regardless of your later career choices and ambitions.
